Zimmer, reconstructive surgery market leader in the United States, Europe and Asia Pacific – and world number one in the joint reconstructive market - intends adding South Africa to this list in the not too distant future.
“We definitely have the products and the expertise to achieve this,” newly appointed Zimmer SA business unit director, Steven Orange, explained shortly after returning to his native South Africa recently to head up the local operation. He had been marketing director for Zimmer in Europe.
Zimmer products, now available in more than 100 countries, were introduced to South African surgeons 13 years ago when still represented by Protek and subsequently Sulzer Medica: “Needless to say, they have enjoyed the respect of the local surgeons through the years, and this provides a solid base for a new set up of Marketing- and value added support. Our focus is to understand the needs of a “new patient” who is more active, more knowledgeable, and who is living longer. Investment in research has also played a major part – no less than 6% of our global annual sales income is dedicated to R&D – as has continuing education. Said Orange: “By collaborating with and actually working with innovative surgeons worldwide on our trademarked Minimally Invasive Solutions (MIS) we make every effort to improve patient quality of life.
“Through medical education events, live web cast surgeries, interactive learning tools and The Zimmer Institute, more than 7500 surgeons worldwide have had the benefit of exposure to Zimmer’s advanced techniques and designs. “
And as has been the case in other important markets, growth and acceptance of MIS Procedures and Technologies in South Africa,” Orange concluded, “will be assisted by the training of surgeons in different MIS approaches for both knee and hip replacements.”
